Weather Damages Force Theatre To Raise $100,000 before Re-Opening
Severe cold weather deals devastating blow to Hi-Desert Playhouse
JOSHUA TREE, CA- A local landmark known for live theatre, concerts, dance, and art shows was hit with a devastating blow on January 13th when overhead water pipes burst in the main theatre due to the severe cold weather. As of right now, we are trying to gather community support to start rebuilding, stated HDPG Board President Jarrod Radnich. The Hi-Desert Playhouse is a non-profit organization and had plans for revision, but nowhere near the magnitude they now must endure. As of Thursday, estimated cost of repairs was totaling well over $150,000 not including replacing the mechanicals. Mechanicals such as the heating & air system alone will cost over $60,000, and the almost 30-year-old theatre must also be brought up to today's strict commercial building codes. Altogether, it will cost nearly a quarter of a million dollars before the theatre can raise the curtain on another show. This theatre was built entirely by the generosity and support of the community, and now it will take that same level of generosity and support to rebuild it, said Vice President Craig Knudsen. After seeing the damage, Theatre 29 Board President and Z107.7 FM radio personality Gary Daigneault offered to host a radio-a-thon to gather community gifts and donations to help offset the costs. Though the new Hi-Desert Playhouse board of directors is hopeful that a portion of the damages will be covered by insurance, it has been made clear that they will have to raise funds nearing $100,000 before the theatre can re-open. The Hi-Desert Playhouse was recently enjoying a surge of popularity with sold-out shows like A Christmas Carol and the acclaimed Bullshot Crummond. This theatre is for the community, said volunteer Kathleen Radnich. It is a place where people can escape their everyday troubles and come together as family and friends to enjoy moments of laughter and play. We are hoping that the public will recognize what we are doing and will try to help. If you would like to donate to the Rebuilding Fund, please call 760.366.3777 or send an email toinfo@hidesertplayhouse.com. You may also mail the theatre at: Hi-Desert Playhouse Guild, Inc., P.O. Box 128, Joshua Tree, CA 92252

The Dianalogues
At Groves Cabin Theatre In Morongo Valley
Plays Saturdays & Sundays Through Sunday, February 18. Laurel Haines' acclaimed comedy. The show will play four weekends on Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2:30 PM through Sunday, February 18. The Dianalogues is a comedic look at the world of women as seen through the looking glass of Princess Diana's life and tragic death. Eleven women and one man explore the mystique of the late Princess Di, sharing life experiences that have been influenced by the former fairytale princess turned victim of fame. The characters include an eight year old girl as she watches the Royal Wedding, a world-weary Princess Di impersonator, a homicidal housewife, and Mother Teresa. The women highlighted in the script are from all strata of society, yet through their various encounters, they reveal the contradictory expectations placed on women in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Moments of insight are juxtaposed with over-the-top comedy. As the story unfolds, these women tell us how they deal with image problems, relationships, equality issues and a host of unhelpful men. The Dianalogues manages to be interesting, moving, educational, politically incorrect, and very funny--all at the same time. Playwright Laurel Haines has lived in New York, Arizona, and, most recently, Chicago. The production's stellar cast of popular local actors features Tarin Cochran, Wendy Cohen, Hannah Covington, Marge Doyle, Jenise Fryatt, Joy Groves, Kathy Inscore, Charlie Parker, Katie Peacher, Julie Scott, Ralph Simmons, and Donette Swain. Groves Cabin Theatre has won multiple Desert Theatre League awards for its high-quality productions. The 23-seat theater offers one of the most intimate theatrical experiences available anywhere in the world. The limited seating means early reservations are a must. The Dianalogues plays Saturday evenings at 8:00 PM and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 PM from January 27, through February18. Groves Cabin Theatre is located at 8768 Desert Willow Trail in Morongo Valley north of Highway 62 (look for the large red, white, and blue stone on the north side of the highway). Tickets for all seats are $10. For additional information and reservations call! (760) 365-4523.
